The security calendar got off to a flying start this year with Intersec Dubai 2018 – which saw the event celebrate its 20th year! TDSi hasn’t quite managed the full stint, but I am proud to say we have been in Dubai for the last 14 years, promoting the best in UK security products and services.
Growing and Developing
When we first started visiting Intersec it was tentatively held over two halls. Now however, it takes up the whole of the World Trade Centre in Dubai! This is no mean feat, the venue is enormous - featuring a total of 1.3 million square feet of covered exhibition and event space, comprising of 21 halls along with over 40 meeting rooms, across three floors.
The floor space doesn’t leave the venue empty either – 2018 saw Intersec comfortably full again. The show is always excellent and offers visitors a true insight into the latest technology and security trends. It is also very well divided between different disciplines including security, health & safety and firefighting/prevention services.
This year we saw another steady stream of visitors at the show and enjoyed meeting many interesting people on the TDSi stand. What also really struck me and the team was the diversity of visitors in Dubai.
For instance, we were surprised but equally delighted, to meet visitors from Eastern Europe - which I think is a first for us at Intersec. We also met far more visitors from Southeast Asia at the event. This is a region we work extensively in and we know there is very keen interest in British security products from buyers there.
Overall, we very much got the impression that Intersec is increasingly enjoying a much broader footprint of international visitors from not only the Middle East but well beyond it too. It echoes our experiences elsewhere that security is truly becoming an international market.
With the current political climate in Saudi Arabia, it was predictable that there was a palpable reduction in visitors from the country. However, this apparent drop in numbers was more than replaced by additional visitors from Europe and Asia, along with North Africa, which is seeing an impressive resurgence in security spending.
It’s fair to say that myself and the team very much enjoyed being in Dubai in January! The weather was much warmer (and drier) than it is in the UK at that time of the year. We always feel very welcome in the region and it is a very pleasant trip to make, especially as we had a good opportunity to meet with our partners and customers in the region as well.
TDSI has a busy year ahead in terms of events, across a diverse range of UK and international shows. Intersec was an excellent way to start the year and to set the agenda throughout 2018.
