Can S-Series controllers talk to EXgarde?

Yes, EXgarde can talk to all S-Series controllers though it should be noted that S-Series controllers are now obsolete. For these controllers to talk correctly to EXgarde they must have version 4 firmware in

No, but we can do anti-passback across 16 readers using an Expert and slaves. Also we can do large area anti-passback across controllers hosted on one computer

How many controllers can be put on EXgarde?

The standard EXgarde Pro license has 128 doors and this can be upgraded

How many workstations can EXgarde Pro take?

Up to 24 workstations can be used with EXgarde Pro with the appropriate licensing. If more than this number is required then a special version of the software is required.

No, this requires EXgarde Pro

Can MICROgarde software be used on more than one computer?

No, the MICROgarde software is designed for single computer use only for multiple workstations please upgrade to EXgarde PRO

No this feature is not available in MICROgarde

What is the default password for MICROgarde?

There is a default user of Admin but the password is defined by the user on 1st use of the software. In previous versions the password for Admin was tdsi or 1234

Can Ultraguard S software be upgraded?

Yes, a partial upgrade is possible. People, access groups and cards can be retrieved from the Ultraguard S software but no hardware.

Can S-Series controllers be repaired?

No, these controllers have been obsolete for some time and no replacement parts are available for repairs

Can I upgrade S-Series controllers to newer controllers?

Yes but the type of controller is dependent on the reader technology

What type of controllers can take the standard Microcard reader?

S-Series (System 1, System 2, System 4 analogue) EX-Series (Expert 2, Expander (aka slave), Excel 2)

What type of controllers can take a proximity reader?

All TDSi controllers can take a proximity reader apart from the System 4 analogue controller

How many controllers can be put on an RS485 communications line?

The maximum amount of controllers on a single bus is 31 but it should be taken into consideration that the more controllers per line the slower that information can be sent or retrieved

What is the recommended amount of controllers per RS485 communications line?

This is really dependent on the amount of cards on the system between 1-1000 cards 15 controllers is a suitable number. Between 1000-5000 10 controllers is suitable and between 5000-45000 cards 5 or less is wise.

What types of communications are available on TDSi controllers?

All networkable controllers have RS232 and RS485 and some have onboard IP below is a list of the communications methods available for controllers Onboard IP available on Expert2 and Excel4 Additional IP modules are available for the MICROgarde 1 & 2 For EXcel 2 and the S-Series an IP to Serial converter can be used

How many cards can a controller take?

When connected to EXgarde the default capacities are System 1=1550 System 2=5910 System 4=4620 MICROgarde 1 version2 =5541 version3=25330 MICROgarde 2 version2=4200 version3=19247 EXcel 2=23510 EXcel 4=18260 Expert2=47770

Where is the best place to fit lock suppression?

Lock suppression should be fitted at the lock only should this not be possible it should be fitted as close to the lock as possible and not at the controller

Can MICROgarde controllers be added to the same system as EX-series controllers?

This is possible but the MICROgarde takes 2 wire RS 485 only which may mean that the EX-series communications wiring has to be changed to allow for 2 wire. If possible it is better to add MICROgarde on a separate port/s when also using EX-series.

How many amps is a MICROgarde power supply?

Originally they were 2 amps but the newer supplies are 3 amps

How many amps is an EX-series power supply?

Originally they were 3 amps but the newer supplies are 4 amps

How can you identify version 2 hardware from version 3?

Version 2 hardware has 2 square chips in the centre of the board whereas version 3 only has one chip or use Xchat

Do the controllers have onboard batteries?

Yes, both the MICROgarde and EXseries have onboard lithium memory batteries, it should be noted that they are disabled either by a jumper or paper tab when in storage and on installation should be enabled

What is the memory life of a controller when on the lithium battery?

5 years

What type of backup battery is required for full operation in a power cut?

All cases are designed to take a 7 AH battery

How long can a system run on a standard backup battery?

This is dependent on several factors but normally at least 3 hours operation is possible

Can bigger batteries be used for increased power outage protection?

More battery storage can be included externally if a greater back up time is required

What is the largest door controller?

We do door controllers that can take up to 4 readers. The Expert can have up to 7 slaves or eXpanders connected to it and whilst there would be a number of cases the controllers behave like a 16 reader controller

Does your system do airlock or mantrap?

Yes

How can the firmware version be identified?

If version 3 of EXgarde or above is in use the firmware is displayed in the controller list - however there is a software tool called Xchat that can display the firmware (For further information please contact TDSi regarding this)

Does the controller need to be connected to a computer to work?

No, the controller holds all the necessary information

What type of reader input does the MicroGarde controller take?

Standard Clock and Data (ABA track 2 emulation) and Wiegand

What type of reader input does the EX-Series controller take?

Standard Clock and Data (ABA track 2 emulation) and Wiegand (with the EXcel 2 and Expert 2 analogue MicroCard reader input)

Are your controllers waterproof?

No, for controllers to be mounted in wet or damp locations they must be inside a suitable IP rated box

Do your controllers have a fire input?

No, but there is an automatic global release facility in the software

What's the difference between a door controller and a reader controller?

The EX-Series can be considered as a reader controller, for instance the EXcel4 can take 4 readers. So if the are 2 doors with read in and read out readers the EXcel 4 can control 2 doors, but if all doors are read in and egress out then 4 doors can be controlled from the one controller. The MICROgarde range is a door controller when used with approved TDSi readers. This means the MICROgarde 2 can control 2 doors whether they are read in only or read in and out.

Can you have a card with more than one technology?

Yes, there are a number of technologies that can be put on card the most common is a magnetic swipe strip on Proximity or MIFARE cards

Can Microcard readers be upgraded to contactless/RFID/Proximity readers?

This depends on the type of controller and the cabling that has been used. Please contact technical support for more details.

How many cores do you need for a proximity reader?

5 cores are needed for Proximity readers

How many cores do you need for a Microcard reader?

4 cores are needed for Microcard readers

How far apart should proximity readers be fitted to each other?

Proximity readers should have at least 1 metre between them

How far apart should MIFARE readers be fitted to each other?

MIFARE readers should be at least 50cm apart

Are Proximity and MIFARE the same?

No, Proximity and MIFARE use different technologies and are not interchangeable however there are dual technology readers becoming available

Are your readers waterproof?

The Proximity and MIFARE readers are fully potted some have a captive lead and some have a connector but when correctly fitted are impervious to the elements

What type of output does the EXprox have?

How far can a controller be from a reader?

With Proximity and MIFARE readers the range can be up to 150m depending on the cable

What is the difference between MIFARE and Proximity?

The Proximity technology works at 127 KHz and is a read only technology. The MIFARE technology works at 13.56 MHz and is used in both read and write applications

Is there a vandal resistant MIFARE reader?

There are vandal resistant MIFARE readers available but they are not the same as proximity vandal resistant readers. This is because the frequency at which MIFARE works stops it working so well with metal readers

Are there long range MIFARE readers?

No again because of the frequency the MIFARE its range is not as flexible as Proximity

Can I mix reader technologies on a system?

Yes

My readers are showing a solid green LED and the door is unlocked

This is usually caused by a schedule or somebody unlocking the door from the software, in addition a faulty or incorrectly wired request to exit button would cause this
